Is an Old Piano Worth Repairing, or Should You Replace It?
What should be checked before deciding whether to repair or replace the piano?
Structure and soundboard
The technician checks whether the piano can hold pitch after tuning and inspects the condition of the tuning pins.
Action and keyboard
The technician checks sticking keys, key return, hammers, and adjustment points in the action.
Exterior finish
The exterior finish, scratches, and decorative parts are inspected separately.
What kinds of problems can often be repaired so the piano can continue to be used?
These symptoms do not automatically mean that the piano should be replaced. The actual instrument should be inspected first to separate localised repair work from major underlying problems.

What information should you prepare for the technician?
of the piano
to identify the instrument
and service area
date of the most recent tuning or repair
describe what you have noticed as clearly as possible

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a piano that is several decades old still be repaired?
Yes, if the piano still has a good foundation. Age alone does not determine the quality of the instrument. A technician should inspect the structure, action, and pitch stability before a decision is made.
Does an old exterior finish mean the inside of the piano is also in poor condition?
Not necessarily. The exterior finish and the internal structure and action are separate parts of the piano and should be assessed separately.
Should I repair the piano or buy another one?
The decision should be made after the actual condition has been inspected and compared with the intended use, budget, and scope of work required.
Can I send photos for an assessment first?
Photos or videos are not required. Simply describe the basic symptoms to the team. The repair recommendation and quotation can only be confirmed after a technician inspects the actual piano.
